It all began in 1991 when Amy Hill Hearth was asked by The New York Times to write a feature article on the Delany Sisters. After introducing the Delany Sisters to a world audience, Amy Hill Hearth was asked by a book publisher, Kodansha America, to expand her newspaper feature into a full-length biography. Ms. Hearth chose instead to create the work as an oral history and worked with the Delany Sisters for almost two years to gather material for the book.
"Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years," was published in September of 1993 by Kodansha America, Inc., and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for over six months. Dell Publishers has to date sold over 500,000 copies of the paperback. "Having Our Say" was followed up in November of 1994 with "The Delany Sisters’ Book of Everyday Wisdom."
Finally, "The Delany Sisters Reach High", is a beautifully illustrated biography of the Delany sisters written by Amy Hill Hearth, the journalist and author who first found the then-reclusive sisters in 1991 and was co-author with the sisters of the 1993 bestseller, Having Our Say. Published by Abingdon Press, the children's book is illustrated by the award-winning artist, Tim Ladwig. (Publication date: January 2003). Available at Amazon.com.
