The sisters first rose to fame in 1991 when writer Amy Hill Hearth (Madigan) meets with the sweet and charming 102-year-old Sadie (Carroll) and the somewhat headstrong and suspicious 100-year-old Bessie (Dee) for an article in The New York Times.

When the response to her story is overwhelming, Amy convinces the sisters to collaborate with her on a book about their family as well as a chronicle of the changes in America as experienced during their long, rich lives.
Haleigh Porter, Lonette McKee and Kiara Harris

The book Having Our Say wove the sisters' anecdotes into a touching, universal story of family, love, courage and tenacity. It was published in 1993 and was featured on The New York Times Best Sellers list for more than two years. The book was adapted as a Broadway play in 1995 and it was cited with three Tony nominations, including Best Play.
